BRIEF BIO:
Marek Mraz lab investigates the biology of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (the most common leukemia in adults) and other malignancies arising from B-lymphocytes. He studies how these cancer cells interact with other immune cells and how signals from the B-cell receptor (BCR) and other cells (especially T cells) in the tumor microenvironment influence malignant B-cell behavior. He has described new mechanisms of cellular communication and is also exploring novel inhibitors and therapeutic combinations that could improve the treatment of leukemia and other blood cancers. He was trained in both clinical medicine and molecular biology and subsequently conducted postdoctoral research in the United States at the University of California, San Diego, and Mayo Clinic. He received a grant from the European Hematology Association (2015), two prestigious ERC Grants from the European Research Council (in 2019 and 2026), and, in 2024, the most prestigious national grant (the EXPRO grant from the Czech Science Foundation). He collaborates closely with hematologists at University Hospital Brno and with many international teams. He has received multiple national and international awards for his work, including the Neuron Award for Young Scientists, the national Czech Head Award, and awards from professional societies (EHA, Czech Hematology Society, Czech Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology). He served on the FEBS Grants and Fellowship Committee and the EHA EU Affairs Committee.
